With the objective of determining the length of time that five varieties of soybeans (Doko, IAC-8, Cristalina, UFV-5 and EMGOPA-301) can be left in the field without significant seed germination damage, the present study was carried out in 1986/87 in Uberlandia, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The experimental design included random plots for seeding, sub-divided for harvesting at differint times. Results showed that increased time in the field was directly related to reduced germination capacity. Among the five time periods used in the study (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 days after reaching the R8 stage), the UFV-5 variety presented highest levels of germination. It was followed by EMGOPA-301, Cristalina, Doko, and IAC-8 in decreasing order. An increase in fungus-especiallyPhomopsis sojae - was observed as harvesting was delayed. As fungus increased the percent of seeds which sprouted (Blotter-Test), and the percent of normal sprouts counted using standard germination tests, were consequently reduced. |
